GossipGirl and secrecy

A devoted and loyal viewer of this television show that has had a run of five years now since pilot...finally I will get closure in two-week time !
I have to hand it to them !! Genius script, brilliant plots and even more brilliant if it is possible--the cast. Nobody could play them better than, well, themselves.
Also a series everyone should watch...and no comments for those people who judge the book by its cover page and in the same way, a series by its title. This is not your run-of-the-mill girls' gossip show...it couldn't be further away from that.
In six seasons, they have still kept us guessing as to who is the maiden behind the laptop blog, that's a clever disguise. Finally in next two weeks, comes the last episode and we all will find out who she is.
There are many guesses....Dorota, Nate, Blair, Dan, Serena herself...if you watch the show you know what I am talking about.
I cannot wait for the last episode...and I am sure none of you loyals can...

Myself and English Language

This is one relationship that is most endearing and everlasting. I know that it is protocol for people to get tested for English language skills when they are not from this country. But had they known me to be more English than Indian since my childhood, they would have waved it off...wishful thinking.

So of-course I got my result and of-course it is A , B , A , B ....in which A indicates EXTREMELY HIGH LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY ( yawn. I know ) and B indicates HIGH level of proficiency suitable for medical and other professions and communications. Slightly miffed with the B's....they no doubt came up in writing and listening. Maybe the letter missed some specific detail. And with the listening !!! I felt the tempo of speech was increased slightly, and before you know it, they went on and on with the aus-traaa-leun accent.

GAH....that's all okay as long as it was cleared in the first attempt :)
So i say to the next big one in March --- nothing to do with English and all to do with Dentistry....BRING IT ON...

Yash Chopra and India

Most of Yash Chopra's career heights were reached even before I was born. Before my craze for the film industry and Shahrukh Khan. Many love stories in modern India are linked to the cinema...as are sadly, many unfinished love stories. Everyone wants "that kind of true love"...and while not everyone has access to Shakespeare, everyone can buy a movie ticket to see a Yash Chopra Movie.

The haunting melodies of SILSILA still echo around the mind with images of flowery slopes and unrequited love. Ofcourse my love affair with everything-SRK started with DARR and went on with DDLJ (which ousted Sholay's record as the longest running movie in cinemas. It is still running at Maratha Mandir theater in Mumbai). DIL TOH PAGAL HAI....MOHABBATEIN...SAATHIYA...DHOOM...the list is endless.

How could one show so many shades of a simple emotion? He knew ofcourse what exactly would strike a chord with every Indian and made it larger-than-life, glorious and invaluable. Anyone born with me in 1986 would agree to have been influenced by atleast one of Yash Chopra's countless epics.

His newest movie is set to release...but sadly, the creative genius did not live to see it come to life and win hearts again.
RIP Yash Chopra...you are back with the Creator Of Love Himself

Me and OET

Okay so its one small step for Nishma....one giant leap towards Dentistry in Australia...thankfully Neil Armstrong cannot read this spoof on his famous words. Doesn't mean I did not prepare for the small step though...

The thing with being in love with literature is, there comes a sort of overconfidence as well as a snobbish feeling about giving an English Language Testing Exam such as the OET. I thought to myself when I touched down in Australia 5 months ago, I have been living, breathing, creating, writing, loving English Language since the time I was a kid...so I could take OET as a walk-in anytime....practice material is for the "others". Those people who have spent school time playing on the ground and their teenage years socializing and partying in a native land that does not speak English. It is for the people who have never read a single thing other than their textbooks. BUT that is wrong...these people are brave...I would probably have a hard time learning their language regardless of whether I have partied or studied.

But the truth is, this is just another test with its own protocols. Having a powerful vocabulary surely helps, does give you an edge ( in everything, according to me) but preparation is needed nevertheless. For example, the referral letter has a particular format that is to be followed and the punctuation marks are different than we learnt in the Convent School, in classic English.

Do not walk in thinking you can rule OET because your English is powerful. It will aid you, but is no substitute for practice. Instead, like I did, purchase the relevant coaching material and do it at home. I practised for a total of 4 days...5 hours per day (as I had nothing else to do here)  and that is the thing that may give me an "A" instead of a "B". If you are confident about your skills, consider yourself lucky you do not have to take coaching classes that charge upto $30 per hour.

But do not push your luck by not preparing atall.

Listening part is easy but the Australian accent is different and you need to train your ears to it by listening to news here as well as interacting with true Aussies. Presence of mind required everywhere.
Reading part one is a killer, there are only 15 mins to make sense of two pages of a health-article and answer twisted meaningful questions. Rest all is easy....including writing the letter. Speaking is all a matter of experience...think of the interviewer as your patient...don't worry about things you say...it does not test professional knowledge. Say anything, with proper pauses, stress on particular words and confident fluency.

Awaiting (good) results ...
OET was fun.

Development with Nature

The relationship of human development with nature is much less understood than one would imagine.
What I have seen in Australia is there are perfect roads and perfect parks with buildings and railway. There are pre-determined areas chalked out for trees and wildlife to flourish. Tall skyscrapers can rival any other developed nation and Melbourne has always been in the "world's most live-able cities" list.

That is because each morning when I step out of my home, I can see atleast five different bird species around. Sparrows, crows and sometimes sea-gulls are seen happily co-existing with the so called concrete-jungle. That is what is to be learnt from here....development does not have to be at the cost of nature. So throw away those ideas and imagery that implies human advancement leads to loss of flora and fauna...instead embrace a new way of thinking in which it is a win-win situation...come to Melbourne and find out how.
